Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
